
Baringo Senator William Cheptumo has passed on.
Cheptumo died at the Nairobi Hospital where he had been
battling undisclosed illness.
His family said he had been sick for some time until his
death on February 16.
He had been discharged from hospital last week but his
condition deteriorated prompting his hospitalization again, a family member
said.
President William Ruto mourned the death.
He said Cheptumo was a progressive leader who was dedicated
to public service.
“He was vocal, hardworking and a tireless champion for the
transformation of Baringo.
The Cheptumo family, friends and the people of Baringo
County are in our thoughts and prayers,” he said in a post on X.
His body was moved to Lee Funeral Home.
Cheptumo, 57 was a lawyer by profession and had served as a
Member of Parliament for Baringo North in the area between 2008 and 2013.
The UDA party senator was elected to represent Baringo County in the Senate of Kenya in the 2022 General election.
He ousted Kanu party chairman Gideon Moi in the 2022 race.
He was the Chairperson of the Senate National Security, Defense and Foreign Relations Committee.
The Senator is the proprietor of Cheptumo and Company Advocates law firm.
He previously worked as a legal officer for the Central Bank of Kenya and Industrial and Commercial Development Cooperation.
He is an alumnus of the University of Nairobi where he pursued a Bachelor's degree in Law and later pursued a postgraduate diploma in law at the Kenya School of Law.
Cheptumo went to Maregut Primary School where he studied from 1975 to 1981 and earned his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).
He joined Bartolimo Secondary School for his lower secondary education between 1982 and 1985.
In 1986, he joined the prestigious Kabarnet High School for his Upper secondary education.
