The Russian House in Tanzania has revealed their Swahili version of Nikolai Gogol's renowned play, 'The Government Inspector', now titled 'Mkaguzi wa Serikali', Rossotrudnichestvo has said.

Rossotrudnichestvo is a Russian state agency that strengthens Russia's humanitarian presence around the world.

Rossotrudnichestvo reported that 500 copies of the translated book were donated to the National Library of Tanzania.

The Acting Director of the National Library Renhema Ndumbaro received the book which was translated and layed by the Russian House staff.

She expressed the significance of collaborating with the Russian Cultural Centre, emphasising how such initiatives greatly contribute to introducing Tanzanian libraries to the world of Russian literature.

“These 500 copies will also be distributed to regional libraries and schools across the country, thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Dar es Salaam in translating Russian classics into Swahili,” she said.

The artist, Maria Suvorova, who created the illustrations for 'The Government Inspector', took special care to create images that would resonate with and be easily understood by Tanzanians.

A presentation of the translation was held at the National Library of Tanzania, where the Russian House organised a fun and interactive quiz on the Russian alphabet and general facts about Russia.

Winners were rewarded with books of Russian classics, as the quiz was hosted by Daria Ilyenko, curator of Russian language promotion programmes and winner of the Rossotrudnichestvo competition, 'Masters of the Russian Language'.

Since 2021, Rossotrudnichestvo’s missions have been commonly referred to as "Russian Houses."
