Concern as 5 die by suicide in two days

The separate suicide incidents were reported on Tuesday and Wednesday, all involving men.

At least five cases of suicide were separately reported to police in the last two days in a continuing and worrying trend.

The police say they are investigating the cases reported between February 18 and 19, 2025.

In one of the incidents, Daniel Kyavu, 35, is said to have hung himself using a piece of cloth tied around his neck, from one of the roof rafters in his house in Matuu, Yatta.

Police visited the scene but did not find a suicide note.

The body was removed to Kitui Level IV Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

In Buuri, Meru County, police are investigating the suspected suicide of Kenneth Kirinya, 42, which was reported on Tuesday at 7 pm.

The man is alleged to have hung himself using an electric cable wire tied around his neck from one of the roof rafters inside his house.

Police officers visited the scene and confirmed the incident. No suicide note was recovered.

The body of the deceased was taken to the Cool Breeze Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

A third incident happened in Gichira, Nyeri County, at around 7:45 pm on Tuesday.

The man identified by police as Waititu Ndirangu, 73, is said to have hung himself using a piece of cloth tied around his neck from a roof truss inside his bedroom.

No suicide note was found, and the body, showing no visible injuries was moved to Nyeri Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

In the fourth incident, Guyo Dima Tari, 31, is said to have died by hanging himself using a manila rope tied around his neck on a tree at 1:30 pm on Tuesday.

Police officers visited the scene and found the lifeless body dangling on a tree.

No suicide note was found. The body was removed to the Marsabit County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy.

On Wednesday at 4:30 pm at Rueben Slum, Makadara Division, police received a report by Nyumba Kumi elder in Bantu area slums that she received information of a suicide.

Officers visited the scene and found the body of one adult identified as Thomas Nzioka aged 40 years, dangling from the roof.

He allegedly hung himself by a nylon rope tied around his neck.

The body was moved to the City morgue awaiting post-mortem.

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 720,000 people die due to suicide every year.

The health body stated that suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds, adding that 73 per cent of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
