A 35-year-old woman is believed to have killed her three children before she died by suicide in a tragic incident in Githogoro slums, Runda, Nairobi.

The boys were aged six, four and two.

Their bodies lay close to each other when they were discovered by locals on Tuesday, police said.

The body of Monica Wandane Ndungu was first found hanging in her house with a bed sheet tied around her neck.

It was then the bodies of the boys were found in the house.

It was then established that the woman strangled the children using a bed sheet before she died by suicide.

Police said they discovered a suicide note believed to have been authored by the woman.

Nairobi regional police commander George Sedah said they are investigating if the deceased woman authored the note.

“Preliminary findings show she wrote it before she died but experts are investigating the same. We want to be sure,” he said.

The note stated the woman was unhappy in her marriage as she had a poor relationship with her husband.

Police picked up the bodies to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

A mob watched from a distance as the police were picking up the bodies.

Her neighbours said the woman and her husband had been married for more than ten years.

They however had quarrels.

The man was not present when the incident happened.

This is the latest such incident of suicide to happen in the country.

There is a campaign to address the menace, officials say.

Police say at least a case of suicide is reported daily.

The majority of suicide victims are men.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
