Senator Cheptumo passed away on February 16, 2025, while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital.

In a statement on Monday, former CS Simon Chelugui, who is also the chairman of the planning committee for the burial, said there will be church funeral service in Nairobi on February 27, 2025, at Milimani AIC Church.

He added that there will be meetings on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Wednesday, and Thursday this week, as well as on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Chelugui said that additional meetings will take place simultaneously in Kabarnet and at his Tunoiwo home.

The former CS said that Senator Cheptumo served Kenya in various capacities as an astute lawyer, a brilliant and strategic politician, a philanthropist, and a committed member of the AIC Church.

“He touched many lives, and his legacy is a testament to hard work, humility, and adherence to the highest standards of democratic principles, justice, and fairness,” Chelugui said.

“Rising from a humble background, he became a national leader, serving for nearly two decades in both the National Assembly and the Senate.”

The former CS added that Cheptumo, a consummate legal practitioner, played a significant role in Kenya’s constitutional, political, and judicial reforms.

On behalf of the family, the former CS thanked President William Ruto, the leadership of the Senate and the National Assembly, the church, county governments, friends, and relatives for their heartfelt messages of condolence to Anne Cheptumo and her family.

He said that Cheptumo had been battling a medical condition for some time, receiving treatment both locally and abroad.

“Despite the sustained efforts of his family, the Senate, and his medical team to provide him with the best care, he sadly passed away on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at Nairobi Hospital,” he said.

The President mourned the death of Cheptumo, describing him as a progressive leader who was dedicated to public service.

“He was vocal, hardworking, and a tireless champion for the transformation of Baringo.  The Cheptumo family, friends, and the people of Baringo County are in our thoughts and prayers,” he said in a post on X.
