

At
least 10 people were injured after a fire raged through structures in Kariobangi Light Industries area, Nairobi.
Police said property of unknown value was destroyed in the fire that took
almost six hours to contain.
The fire broke out at about 1 pm on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
The fire destroyed three bakeries, two timber yards, car
garages, two schools, a carton yard, a firewood yard, an LPG gas
cylinder yard, residential houses and other structures.
The
fire is believed to have broken out from one of the affected structures before
spreading to others.
It
was worsened by the cartons, heavy winds and the timber yard.
The incident displaced dozens of pupils of the affected schools after they turned up for school on Monday morning only to find some of their classes burnt down.
Firefighters from Nairobi City County and Kiambu County Fire
Departments rushed to the scene to put out the blaze, which continued to reignite
until late in the evening.
Police said it was contained later on. A team revisited the scene
on Monday as part of the probe into the incident.
Nairobi police commander George Sedah said they are investigating the
incident.
“We have injuries sustained as the locals fought to contain the spread
of the fire. Many people are displaced following the fire,” he said.
Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with St John Ambulance attended
to the victims.
Elsewhere,
a man was killed in a fire incident in Kanguruwe area, Kayole, Nairobi.
Police
said the victim was sleeping in one of the houses that were affected by the
fire that broke out on Friday night.
Locals
with the assistance of the Nairobi County Fire Brigade managed to extinguish
the flames.
It
was then they realized the body of a man in the structures.
Property
of unknown value was destroyed in the fire, police said.
The
cause of the fire is still under investigation, police said.
The
body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and probe.
