Kenya’s first automaker
company, Mobius Motors, will continue operating in Kenya after it was acquired by
a Middle East Company.
Silver Box, a company that
specializes in driving businesses forward through intelligent investment,
expert corporate management and advanced technology, has now bought Mobius
Motors in an announcement made on Tuesday.
Mobius Motors issued a
statement last year detailing its intentions to cease operations after
appointing a new liquidator, which signaled an end for the country’s first
locally manufactured vehicle.
The
automaker further struggled to settle suppliers and pay salaries as debts from
its operations rose with the incentives towards local automobile assembly doing
little to salvage the situation.
But
with the new ownership agreement between the two companies, there is renewed
hope that Mobius Motors will be fully revitalized.
“Founded
over 14 years ago with a total investment of approximately Sh5 billion, Mobius
Motors has built a strong foundation in Kenya’s automotive industry,” the
company said.
“This
acquisition continues the company’s philosophy of growth of Mobius, as Silver
Box take the helm to continue the legacy of the Kenyan manufactured automobile.”
Several
operations have already resumed, including the reopening of the service center
and services of Mobile vehicles.
Production
and manufacturing are expected to be fully operational by July 2025 for the
Mobius 3 Model and a newly developed model launched by December 2025.
“I'm
happy to hand over to John Kavila (the new chief executive officer), who will
pursue the development of Mobius Motors,” the outgoing CEO Nicholas Guibert
stated.
“He
will get the visionary and financial support from Silver Box to successfully
expand brand's market share, introduce newer models, develop a network of
Service stations, and make of Mobius Motors a major player on the African
continent,” Guibert said.
The
new CEO further expressed optimism that the company, through Silver Box, was
poised to drive innovation and expand Kenya’s automotive sector, reinforcing
itself as a leader in sustainable and locally focused vehicle production.
