Fire incident

An unknown person has been burnt beyond recognition after fire razed mabati houses in Mlolongo, Machakos County.

Athi River East sub-county police commander Anderson Mbae said the body was discovered at the scene after the fire was contained in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.

Mbae said the fire broke out at around 12.30 am and was reported to the Mlolongo police station as a fire incident report.

"Police officers who were on patrol within the Madharau area of Mlolongo Township saw huge smoke billowing from the High Class direction, and they rushed to find out. Upon arrival, they found 12-roomed mabati structures next to High Class on fire," Mbae told the  Star.

He said the officers, with the assistance of members of the public, managed to evacuate several people who were in the rooms.

The fire brigade from Mavoko Municipality arrived in time and promptly helped extinguish the fire.

"However, the body of an unknown person was found, having been burnt beyond recognition," Mbae said.

The police boss said the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

He said the value of property lost to the fire had not yet been conclusively established.

Mbae said his officers processed the scene and took the body to the City mortuary, awaiting identification and postmortem.

The case is pending investigation.
