Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere on Tuesday made a passionate plea to President William Ruto to upgrade roads in her constituency to bitumen standards to save residents trouble during travel.

It was during Ruto's Day One of his five-day visit of the Mt Kenya region which started in Laikipia county.

Korere lamented that the Nanyuki-Rumuruti road is so bad such that she hasn't been able to plait her hair because whenever she travels the road, she must take a full body shower at the end of her journey due to dust.

“Barabara ya Nanyuki kuenda Rumuruti, barabara ya Nanyuki kuenda Doldol. Mheshimiwa Rais saa hizi ukienda Doldol, it is almost impossible. Ukiona mimi sijasuka nywele ni kwa sababu nikitoka Doldol nikifika Nanyuki lazima nioge kuanzia nywele mpaka vidole. Naomba Baba yangu hata kabla ya lami, emergency funds ya kufanya hio barabara motorable,” she said.

Loosely translates to: Nanyuki to Rumuruti, Nanyuki to Doldol. Mr President these days going to Doldol is almost impossible. I have not plaited my hair because whenever I travel from Doldol to Nanyuki, I must shower from head to toe. I ask you my father, even before tarmacking it, we need emergency funds to make the roads motorable.

Korere asked the President to help residents sort out the poor state of the roads because it has become a menace in the area.

The President began his five-day development tour in the central region in Laikipia county.

He will visit a total of nine counties within that period: Nyeri, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, and Murang’a.

On Tuesday, he was in Rumuruti in Laikipia West Constituency, Nanyuki in Laikipia East, and Narumoru in Kieni Constituency, Nyeri county.

He will then head to Meru and Kirinyaga on Wednesday to continue his tour.

Ruto is accompanied by the Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, among other local leaders.

On Tuesday, Ruto flagged off the Last Mile Connectivity Programme in Laikipia county to set the tempo of the high-octane visit, coming six months after he was last in the region.

The President also officially opened the rehabilitated Ng'arachi Comprehensive School.

He also delivered a school bus to Dr Wachira Secondary School, Kiamariga, and handed over car wash machines to boda boda operators from the county to boost their incomes.

The President later visited Nanyuki town where he interacted with residents and launched development projects.

He inspected the Sh350 million Nanyuki Modern Market and toured the Nanyuki Affordable Housing Project.

The President also laid the foundation stone for the construction of 10 classrooms at Nanyuki D.E.B. Primary and Junior Secondary School.
