Music Copyright Society of Kenya CEO Ezekiel Mutua

The Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) has dismissed reports that it has terminated the tenure of chief executive officer Ezekiel Mutua.

National chairman Ephantus Kamau said a letter circulating on social media claiming to terminate the tenure of Mutua is fake.

“Please disregard this misinformation,” Kamau said in a statement to newsrooms.

He said the interim board is excited and fully committed to serving the entire membership.

He added that the purported author is merely a member with no locus standi for such a role, and their tenure lapses on February 16, 2025.

He further said the alleged author is subject to restraining orders and is currently in court for contempt of court orders and is awaiting further directions.

“We will provide updates on this matter in due course,” he stated.

In the letter, the MCSK board of directors purportedly notifies members, staff, stakeholders, and the general public that it has terminated the employment of Mutua as CEO effective April 3, 2025.

“This public notice is a caution that Ezekiel Mutua is not authorized/allowed to transact any business for and on behalf of Music Copyright Society of Kenya Limited in any capacity,” the notice read in part.

The letter goes on to say MCSK shall not be accountable and/or liable for any actions, engagements, commitments, or obligations made by Mutua with third parties.

MCSK is a Collective Management Organization (CMO) that represents the rights of authors, composers, arrangers, and publishers of musical works, collecting and distributing royalties for public performance and broadcasting of their members' rights.

It acts as an intermediary between music creators and users, ensuring that creators are compensated for the use of their music.

MCSK has a wide and diverse membership, including Kenyan and international authors, composers, arrangers, and publishers of copyrighted musical works.

The main function of MCSK is to bridge the gap between music rights holders and music users, ensuring that creators are fairly compensated for the use of their work.
