President William Ruto has announced that his government will connect at least 10,000 households in Nyeri to electricity within the next seven months.

The President made the remarks on Saturday in Nyeri Town Constituency, where he inspected the ongoing construction of the Ruringu Affordable Housing Project.

“My government has allocated Sh850 million for the project,” Ruto told residents who turned out to welcome him.

“Because there are some parts of Nyeri still lagging, we shall, after the end of this year, add another Sh600 million to ensure electricity reaches every home.

The President directed Energy Principal Secretary Kamau Wachira to ensure the directives are implemented within the set timelines.

During his five-day tour of the Mount Kenya region, the President has pledged billions of shillings for electricity connectivity as part of fulfilling one of his key campaign promises.

On April 2, President Ruto launched a last-mile electricity connectivity project in Meru County targeting 20,000 households, at Sh1.8 billion.

Additionally, the government flagged off another last-mile connectivity project in Meru worth Sh1.2 billion, aimed at providing 10,000 households with access to the national grid.

Speaking on April 3 in Kangema, Murang’a County, during his development tour, the President said that the government has set aside over Sh1 billion to connect more than 16,000 residents to electricity.

“Electricity is not only reserved for the rich; we want all Kenyans to have access to power,” he emphasized.

He pledged to work closely with local leaders, including Kangema Member of Parliament Peter Kihungi, to identify priority areas for connection.

“I’ve spoken to Kihungi, and he will inform me where residents are still living in darkness,” Ruto said.

The President also promised to construct Gakira Market in Kangema, along with 16 other markets across Murang’a County, to enable farmers to sell their produce in a more conducive environment.

“We want farmers to have designated spaces where they can sell their produce and avoid post-harvest losses,” he said.

“The markets will be equipped with water, electricity, and cold rooms, allowing farmers to store their produce and reduce waste,” he added.
