The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has seized contraband worth over Sh2.9 million in Bondo, Siaya County.
This is part of Nacada’s major crackdown on drug trafficking and the illicit liquor trade across the country.
Nacada Chief Executive Officer Anthony Omerikwa, in a statement to the press, said the operation was launched following a tip-off, leading to a raid on a notorious drug dealer’s hideout in Nyamonye Market.
“This operation marks a significant victory in our relentless war against drug abuse and the illegal alcohol trade,” said Omerikwa.
“We will not allow unscrupulous traders to destroy the lives of our youth.”
The raid on the suspect’s home, business premises, and rental houses led to the discovery of 4,600 sticks of suspected cannabis sativa and 11 brooms of suspected bhang, which are awaiting weighing and analysis.
Also confiscated are eight cartons of cigarettes allegedly destined for Uganda and South Sudan, 118 cartons of spirits, 107 cartons of another type of spirit and 12 cartons of liquor.
In a shocking turn of events, four cash safes believed to contain proceeds from illegal activities were also recovered during the multi-agency operation.
“The safes are being examined to determine the exact amount, but we strongly believe these are illicit earnings from the illegal trade,” said Omerikwa.
Two suspects were arrested and are currently being held at Bondo Police Station, awaiting arraignment on April 7.
This seizure comes just a week after a Sh8 million drug bust in Kisii County, signalling a wider nationwide crackdown.
“This is just the beginning,” Omerikwa warned.
“We are scaling up operations across the
country to dismantle these criminal networks and safeguard our youth.”
Nacada has intensified its crackdown on illicit trade and drugs across the country as part of the government's efforts to save lives.
