
Some time in May 2022, the then Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i, warned that criminal networks, money launderers and the folks generally referred to in Kenya’s street slang as “wash wash”, would overrun Parliament by buying their way into election in that year’s polls.
The CS asked intelligence, investigative and electoral candidates’ vetting agencies to tighten the ring on election systems to ensure only people of integrity got elected to Parliament, otherwise up to 40 per cent of elective positions risked falling into the hands of these criminal networks.
