Leaders have joined Kenyans in celebrating Sebastian Sawe on winning the men’s London Marathon.
Sawe won the men’s London Marathon by crossing the line at 2:2:25, maintaining a perfect scorecard after his debut victory in Valencia.
He raised his arms aloft and stuck out his tongue as he crossed the line after moving away around the 16-mile mark, and ran negative splits.
In a statement, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen celebrated the marathoner, saying he is proud of the win.
“Congratulations to Sabastian Sawe for obliterating the field to win the men's London Marathon 2025. What an incredible way to announce your arrival in the Marathon Majors!”
“Big up Joyciline Jepkosgei for the immense grit you displayed to clinch the second place in the women's race. Alexander Munyao, hats off for digging deep into your reserves in the epic battle for third place, and bagging it. To all Kenyans who participated, we are proud of you.”
Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka termed the win as a brilliant performance, saying it was tactically perfect.
“Your solo breakout with 10 kilometres to go will not only go down in history, but will be remembered by future generations. Well done, and we are so proud of you and all Kenyan athletes who put their bodies on the line to redefine what is the standard of running excellence.”
Despite the win, Sawe could not beat the course record of
the late, great Kelvin Kiptum, who won the 2023 London Marathon in 2:1:25.
Although
there was talk about Jacob Kiplimo in the build-up, given his sub-57 world
half-marathon record, the Kenyan crossed the line in second place, 70 seconds
behind Sawe.
This was
Sawe’s second marathon win from two after triumphing in Valencia Marathon four
months ago.
Ugandan legend Jacob Kiplimo finished second after timing 02:03:37, in what was his marathon debut, as immediate former defending champion, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, took third after clocking 02:04:20.
