Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has expressed appreciation to former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and the African Union Election Observation Mission for their role in supporting Ethiopia's electoral process.

In a statement, Abiy said he had met Kenyatta and his team and thanked the 73-member African Union Election Observation Mission, which is led by the former Kenyan president, for its contribution to what he described as Ethiopia's democracy-building process.

“We are grateful to the 73-member African Union Election Observation Mission, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, for its service and contribution to our democracy building process,” Abiy said.

The prime minister said African institutions play an important role in ensuring democratic processes are informed by regional experience and context.

He also acknowledged the work of the electoral observers, noting that teams had been deployed across the country to support the electoral process.

“We recognise and appreciate the tireless efforts of the electoral observers, who deployed teams across the country to support our electoral process and look forward to the outcomes,” he said.

The African Union Election Observation Mission is monitoring Ethiopia's electoral process as part of its mandate to support democratic governance across member states.

Uhuru led the 73-member African Union Election Observation Mission that was deployed to Ethiopia for the June 1, 2026, general election.

According to the African Union, the observers were drawn from 37 African countries and were deployed across the country to monitor key stages of the electoral process, including voting and vote counting.
