Five people have died in a grisly road accident involving a trailer and a tractor that collided near Mathaarub Centre along the Eldoret-Nakuru road.

The accident scene is located a few kilometres from Burnt Forest.

Witnesses said the lorry driver lost control while descending a steep section of the road and rammed into the tractor, which was ferrying logs with four people on board.

“The lorry driver smashed into the tractor, causing a heavy impact during which the tractor overturned, crushing the loaders who were on board,” said a witness.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani confirmed the accident and said officers were at the scene.

“We have lost five people in the accident, and our officers are still at the scene trying to handle the situation,” said Sicharani.

He said initial investigations indicated that the trailer, which was speeding from the Nakuru direction, appeared to have lost its brakes and rammed into the tractor that was heading in the opposite direction.

He said the impact of the accident was severe and the tractor was extensively damaged.

The accident caused a heavy traffic jam along the busy highway.

Sicharani said the bodies of the deceased had been moved from the scene to a mortuary in Eldoret.

Witnesses said all the deceased were men, including both drivers.
