The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary partial closure of a section of Mombasa Road at the Eastern Bypass junction to facilitate road construction works.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, KeNHA said the affected section will be partially closed from June 30 to July 7, 2026.
The closure will affect the Mombasa-bound lanes at the Mombasa Road (A8) and Eastern Bypass junction ramp.
According to the authority, the temporary traffic disruption is necessary to allow for the construction of a box culvert along the road section.
Box culverts are commonly constructed to facilitate proper drainage of storm water beneath roads and highways, helping prevent flooding and damage to road infrastructure during heavy rains.
"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) / Eastern Bypass Junction Ramp (Mombasa Bound Lanes) will be temporarily closed partially from Tuesday, June 30, 2026, to Tuesday, July 7, 2026," the notice stated.
Motorists travelling on the Mombasa-bound carriageway and intending to join the Eastern Bypass have been advised to use a designated diversion route.
KeNHA said drivers should proceed past the closed ramp before turning left onto a diversion that will reconnect them to the bypass further ahead.
The authority further urged road users to exercise caution while approaching the affected section and to adhere to traffic management measures that will be put in place during the construction period.
"Motorists are further advised to approach the affected section with caution, follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site," KeNHA said.
The notice comes as the authority continues implementing road improvement projects aimed at enhancing drainage systems, road safety and traffic flow on major highways across the country.
KeNHA is the state corporation responsible for the management, development, rehabilitation and maintenance of national trunk roads in Kenya.
The authority oversees major highways connecting cities, towns, ports, airports and border points, ensuring that critical transport corridors remain safe and efficient for road users.
Road closures and diversions are regularly implemented by KeNHA whenever major construction, expansion, maintenance or drainage works are underway.
Such temporary disruptions are intended to create safe working conditions for contractors while minimising risks to motorists and ensuring that infrastructure projects are completed efficiently.
Over the years, the authority has overseen several major road projects including highway expansions, bypasses, interchanges and bridge construction aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity across the country.
KeNHA has advised motorists planning to use the affected section of Mombasa Road during the closure period to allow extra travel time and follow directions issued by traffic officers and marshals deployed on site.
