President William Ruto has announced the construction of 252 kilometres of roads in Meru County, including Sh7 billion for the construction of the Nithi Bridge, as part of the government's efforts to improve infrastructure and boost economic activities in the region.

Speaking on Saturday during the burial of Mzee Patrick M'Anaiba Baikilanya, the father of Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu, at Kaelo in Meru County, Ruto said the projects will open up agricultural areas, reduce transport costs and improve access to markets.

The President also announced the deployment of 200 additional police officers to tackle cattle rustling and improve security.

‎He said the government had resolved to end livestock theft, which has persisted in parts of the county for decades.

‎"Wakati tulipata matatizo hapa, tuko na shida kidogo hapa ya wakora na wezi wa mifugo, nilituma askari wengine mia mbili... Msikuwe na wasiwasi, mambo ya ukora na wizi wa mifugo yenu tutakomesha. I want to assure you," the President said.

‎He said he had consulted local leaders on the security situation and directed the implementation of measures to restore peace.

‎"I have held discussions with your leaders, and we have agreed. I have put in place necessary measures because it is not right that after 60 years we are still having this habit of cattle theft," he said.

‎The President said improved security would complement ongoing investments in infrastructure and unlock economic opportunities for residents.

‎The President was in Meru to join family, friends and residents in celebrating the life of Mzee Baikilanya, whom he described as a hardworking and inspiring leader whose legacy would endure for generations.

‎"We celebrate the long and remarkable life of Mzee Patrick M'Anaiba Baikilanya. Mzee was hardworking, inspiring and an illustrious role model to many, and it is no wonder his footprints are evident all over," Ruto said.

‎He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family, saying the government stood with them during the difficult period.

‎"The family, relatives and friends are in our thoughts and prayers at this time of mourning," he said.

‎The burial attracted political leaders from Meru and neighbouring counties, with speakers paying tribute to the late Baikilanya for his contribution to community development and his role in shaping the lives of many people in the region.
