The government has assured Kenyans that it is prepared to respond to any humanitarian challenges that may arise from the forecast of above-normal rainfall expected from October.

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the government has activated multi-agency preparedness measures to reduce risks associated with flooding, landslides and possible displacement of communities.

He said the government was also continuing interventions to address the effects of prolonged drought in affected parts of the country.

Speaking during the Kipkelion East Constituency Academic and Prize-Giving Day at Londiani Boys High School in Kericho County, where he was the chief guest, Ruku said emergency response teams, relief supplies and logistical support had been reviewed and strategically positioned to enable a rapid response where necessary.

"We have ongoing interventions to address the issue, but we have already activated emergency response measures, positioned relief supplies and coordinated with county governments to ensure we are fully prepared to respond to any humanitarian challenges,” Ruku said.

He said county governments were also strengthening contingency plans to enhance preparedness and urged Kenyans to heed weather advisories issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department and rely on official government communication for updates.

Ruku reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting lives, safeguarding livelihoods and ensuring food security through coordinated response mechanisms.

Earlier, the CS presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the Londiani ICT Hub in Kipkelion East Constituency, describing the project as an investment in expanding digital access, fostering innovation and creating opportunities for young people.

He said the ICT hub would offer digital skills training, support innovation and entrepreneurship, and equip young people with the skills needed to participate in Kenya's growing digital economy.

Ruku was accompanied by Kipkelion East MP Joseph Cherorot, Kericho County Director of Education Julius Nkoneshi and Kericho County Commissioner Omar Ali.

During the event, he encouraged eligible young people, particularly in the Rift Valley region, to acquire national identification cards and register as voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Ruku also expressed confidence that President William Ruto would secure a second term in office.

On the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, Ruku said the by-election would not diminish support for President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in the Mt Kenya region, adding that the Kenya Kwanza administration remained focused on implementing its development agenda across the country.
