A 15-year-old girl died following a crocodile attack while fetching water from the Athi River in Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County.

The incident happened in Kamboo Sub-location.

Police said the victim, a Junior Secondary School student, had gone alone to fetch water from the river when she was reportedly attacked by a crocodile and dragged into the water.

Police officers and detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) visited the scene and found that members of the public had already retrieved the girl's body from the river before their arrival.

However, officers were unable to process the scene or remove the body to the mortuary after angry residents reportedly prevented them from carrying out the procedures.

The reason for the standoff was not immediately established.

After the standoff ended, police moved the body to a local mortuary. Officials from the Kenya Wildlife Service visited the scene and advised the family to file a compensation claim.

Residents called for the removal of crocodiles, which they said have been posing a threat in the area.

Meanwhile, police in Murang'a County are investigating the death of a 71-year-old man whose body was found on his farm in Maragua South Sub-County.

The incident was reported on Tuesday evening after a neighbour found the body of Julius Mumunyu Kamau lying on his shamba at Gikomora Village in Ichagaki Location.

According to the report, the neighbour was on his way to deliver milk to Gikomora Shopping Centre when he came across the elderly man lying motionless along a footpath that passes through the farm.

Police officers from Maragua Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), visited the scene and found that the deceased appeared to have collapsed while tilling his land.

The scene was documented, and officers noted that the body had no visible external injuries.

The body was moved to Maragua Level Four Hospital Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to determine the cause of death.

Police said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
