Rwanda's incumbent President Paul Kagame is set to cruise to a fourth term in office in a landslide victory.

In partial results released by the National Electoral Commission, Rwanda, Kagame is leading in the elections held on Monday.

The Commission said Kagame has 7,099,810 votes, representing 99.15 per cent of the total votes tallied.

In the partial results, his closest challenger, Habineza Frank has 38,301 votes while Mfayimana Philippe is last with 22,753.

The tallying of the votes, however, continues, the Commission said.

"As of now, the votes that have been tallied in the elections of the President of the Republic are 78.94%."

Diane Rwigara, an outspoken critic of the president, was barred from running in the election. She was also disqualified in 2017.

According to Rwanda's electoral laws, the NEC has until July 27 to announce the final results of the President of Republic and Parliamentary elections.

They also have until July 20 to make public provisional results of the President of Republic and Parliamentary elections.

Kagame has been President of Rwanda since the year 2000.

The incumbent has been at the helm of Rwandan politics since his rebel forces took power at the end of the 1994 genocide which killed some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus.

He has dominated every election since becoming president in 2000, with over 90% of the vote.

In 2017, he won with a staggering 99%.
