A prison warder hacked his life to death with a panga before ending his life by suicide in a shocking incident that happened in the Mwingi West sub-county in Kitui county.

The warder who was attached to Garissa GK Prison armed with a panga confronted his wife, a primary teacher, and slashed her to death on Thursday after an altercation.

The incident was confirmed by the area sub-county police commander, Ephantus Kenyatta.  He said the man who was 54-year-old accused his 47-year-old wife who was a teacher at Kateiko primary school of infidelity.

“We recovered a note that we believe was left behind by the warder that indicates that he was bitter with his wife for allegedly being promiscuous,” the OCPD told the Star on the phone.

He said the couple’s child who had gone to check on the parents in their house found the mutilated body of their mother lying lifeless and in a pool of blood in the bedroom and alerted the police.

“The police visited the scene and they could not trace the man immediately. A search around the compound discovered his body dangling from a tree behind the house,” said Kenyatta.

He said the police also discovered a handwritten note in which the departed prison warder had indicated that he took the horrendous action because his wife had been cheating on him.

Kenyatta said the bodies were removed to the Migwani Level IV hospital morgue in Mwingi West sub-county for preservation as an investigation into the incident continues.
