CORRIDORS OF POWER

IS A SENIOR politico falling from the grace of the powers that be? Nitpickers and observers claim the man, who has been perceived to be the favourite of a powerful honcho, seems to be getting edged out to the periphery. He has reportedly missed key events, including in areas he would not ordinarily miss. We are told matters started going south for him when a key appointment was made without his knowledge. He had apparently eagerly expected to be moved to the influential docket, having shadowed it for some time when it fell vacant. When the news of the appointment filtered in, he was leading a key meeting but abruptly abandoned it, perhaps to go manage his shock.

THAT KENYANS ON social media have become increasingly ungovernable is an open secret. But a key political figure is yet to accept it. We are told the man banged the table at some of his colleagues for failing to contain the online agitation as every strategy seems to only fuel the vicious fire. Corridors of Power understands tempers flared when officials of a foreign country whose head is set to visit Nairobi reported that its systems were getting jammed by endless spam messages from Kenyans online demanding cancellation of the trip. The messages are full of allegations against the Nairobi regime and some are vulgar expletives.

IT SEEMS A deep-rooted unholy alliance exists between compliance officers at the city county of Nairobi and hawkers, especially along the main highways. For instance, footbridges along the busy Thika superhighway have become a thriving business for the officers who allow hawkers to display their wares in more than half of the spaces meant for pedestrians. The situation is worse in the morning with huge human traffic as Kenyans squeeze themselves into the narrow pathways while the hawkers have a field day. Maybe it is time City Hall turned its attention to the footbridges before they lose their purpose?

****************************

JUST WHO IS fooling who? Seems the recent order by a county government to send hawkers to the backstreets has hit deaf ears. Nothing seems to have changed as the vendors are still an eyesore along all streets. Days after the management moved to restore sanity in the busy town, officers were overheard saying the order would be difficult to implement. They cited similar proclamations in the past that failed to remove the stubborn traders from the streets.
