FALSE: Claims that Embu residents joined Azimio protests misleading

A tweet with an image that went viral on social media on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, with claims that a section of Embu residents joined the Azimio protests is FALSE.

The image depicts two bonfires lit on a road as a crowd appears gathered on one side of the road.

Some Kenyans took to social media to share an image claiming that Embu residents had joined the protest.

Among the Twitter pages that shared the image include Movement for Defence of Democracy which captioned it with information that Azimio demos had roped in Embu residents.

“It has never been about Baba Raila. Runyenjes, Embu County in solidarity. #Maandamanowednesday #Tumechoka HAPPENING NOW,” the tweet read.

The Star Fact Checker has, however, debunked the claim and established that the image is unrelated to the Azimio demonstrations.

A Google Reverse Image search shows that the image was first shared on April 9, 2023, with information related to protests in Chuka, Embu county.

Among the popular Twitter pages that shared the image on April 9, is Ma3Route which captioned it as:

“10:34 Chuka kunachemka....It's Day 2 of Demos...Pics as At 9.30Am Sunday.”

The protests were covered by Citizen TV and its report on April 9 captured the chaotic incidents depicted in the viral image.

The Star Fact Checker has debunked an image shared on Twitter claiming to show Azimio protests in Embu held on July 12, 2023, and established it to be false.
