A report by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals the widespread use of skin-lightening products among women in several African countries.
Nigeria leads with 77% of women regularly using these products, followed by Congo-Brazzaville at 66%, and Senegal at 50%.
Other countries with notable usage include Ghana (39%), South Africa (32%), Zimbabwe (31.15%), and Mali (25%).
The rising demand for skin-lightening products is linked to societal beauty standards that associate lighter skin with attractiveness and social advantage.
However, the health risks are severe. In Northern Nigeria, a mother used skin-lightening products on all six of her children due to family pressure.
As a result, the children now suffer from burns and discoloured skin on their faces and legs.
Health experts warn that prolonged use of these products can cause skin damage, cancer, and other long-term health complications.
