A total of 20.8 million Kenyans have so far registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA), along with 5.7 million of their dependents, data by the Ministry of Health shows.
According to the ministry, the counties leading in registration are Mombasa, Bomet, Nyeri, Elgeyo Marakwet and Kirinyaga.
Health CS Aden Duale said as at March 2025, a total of Sh25.4 billion had been paid by SHA to empanelled and contracted health facilities.
Duale has acknowledged that every year, Kenyans face severe economic hardship due to out-of-pocket payments at the point of care.
This pushes many families into extreme poverty.
