The Starehe Member of Parliament, Amos Mwago has said that it is costly to campaign in Nairobi.
Speaking on Friday, the legislator said that one has to spend just to get an audience with residents of the area one is seeking to represent.
"For citizens to leave their daily hustles to come and listen to you and yet they have to put bread on the table, you have to do some serious mobilization which boils down to money," Mwago said on Citizen TV.
He noted that branding in politics is key since you have to be visible to everybody.
Mwago added that this is all part of the strategies a candidate has to come up with to reach the people including having Town hall meetings, which one has to spend to hold, in terms of facilitation.
"It is a very expensive affair that needs to be done diligently so as to get your message out there like buying dustcoats for people in town, even those who are not from your constituency," he added.
The first time MP, however, said that how much one spends campaigning in Nairobi also depends on how a candidate is running his campaign, they type of branding and how early they began their campaign.
He approximated the amount one needs to successfully campaign in the city for an MP seat to be upwards of Sh50 million.
"I had more than twenty billboards in the city and one costs one hundred thousand per month and yet they stayed up for around four to five months," he stated.
The MP was part of a panel of young aspirants who took part in the August 9 general elections, and the lessons their learnt from the entire process.
