Knowing the difference between blanks and live ammunition is important for preventing unwanted scenarios.

In seeking to distinguish between blank and live ammunition, the obvious question would be-are they similar, and the answer would be a yes.

“You also have to check the pointy end, a blank probably won't have one, or it will just be crimped brass,” says Lakisha Davis of Metapress.

For you to understand how live ammunition works, you must also separate between a bullet and a cartridge.

Live ammunition contains powder, primer, case, and a real bullet at its tip and comes in many shapes and sizes but a blank has a wad made of paper, plastic or cotton.

Their difference is in their damage power and purpose.

When blanks are fired, they recreate the sound of gunfire while the gunpowder combustion causes a muzzle to flash, but with less recoil power than the live ammunition.

Live ammunition can be used for gun range practising, hunting, and combat while blanks are mostly used for shooting simulations or firing teargas canisters.

It is only after examining a spent cartridge that you can be able to tell if it is blank or live ammunition.

“In the words of firearms dealer Bob Lesmeister, "Blanks aren’t toys, you have to remember that the force of the exploding gas is great enough to fire a bullet."

She adds, “Keep in mind that blanks are sometimes filled with more powder than the live ammunition to create a louder bang. This is why you must always put safety first and approach them with caution.”
