Police are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a students’ hostel at the University of Kabianga in Kericho County.

Officials say they are yet to establish the cause of the Wednesday night fire.

Witnesses said the fire began on the fourth floor of Hostel Six, razing down students' property.

Coincidentally, the incident happened the same day when the university was being reopened.

It had been temporarily closed two weeks after students went on a rampage over delayed HELB loan disbursement and planned fee hike.

Fire brigade from the County Government of Kericho and James Finlays Tea Company rushed to the scene and helped in containing the fire.

Rift Valley police boss Tom Odera said experts will investigate the fire.

“We have not recorded any casualty so far but property of unknown value was destroyed,” he said.

He added the experts will include officials from Kenya Power, county officials and police.
