Health CS Susan Wafula has promised to open up Afya House to the public and run a transparent and open ministry.

Speaking on Friday when she flagged off emergency response vehicles to counties, the CS said the ministry has been viewed by both the partners and the public as a ‘dark room’ where Kenyans could not tell what was happening there.

“They would only hear about Afya House when there is a scandal or when there is something bad but I as the CS am determined to change the image of this ministry,” she said.

She has promised to run the ministry in a transparent manner, noting that every decision made will have Kenyans informed and aware of what the ministry is doing.

“Very soon Kenyans shall see a different ministry that they can see through the walls from wherever they are,” she said.

The CS added: “And not just seeing through but that we are changing the landscape of healthcare through the army of community health promoters that we are going to be launching sometime this month or early next month.”

Last month, Wafula reorganised the ministry, purging many of former CS Mutahi Kagwe’s appointees away from Afya House.

She also named five directorates, each with several divisions under it.

About 54 top heads were affected.

Only a few top officials under Kagwe have been retained.
