Narok Senator Ledama OleKina has said that for Kenya Kwanza government to collect more revenue, it should lower taxes.
The senator in a statement on Saturday said the move will encourage more people to start businesses, and religiously pay taxes.
"If you want to collect more revenue, President William Ruto you should lower taxes to encourage more people to start businesses and you will collect more taxes," he said
Ledama added that the head of state should shift focus from the arithmetic effect, which aims at collecting more taxes by increasing taxes.
"Work on economic effect -rather than what you are doing focusing on the arithmetic effect," Ledama added.
"The unintended consequences will be to send investors to other countries such as Zambia where they are being welcomed. Case in point the agricultural sector."
His statement echoes that of Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga, who called on the President to stop over-taxing Kenyans.
Raila said over-taxing Kenyans as a way of raising government funds is counterproductive and oppressive.
He said the government should instead consult stakeholders and come up with amicable ways of raising funds to avoid hurting Kenyans, who are already struggling with the hard economic times.
“Sometimes, you can milk a cow too much until only blood comes out. You promised to fight for hustlers, now mama mbogas are being oppressed as they go about their mama mboga businesses," Raila added.
