Kenya Railways has announced a temporary suspension of train services along the Syokimau and Lukenya routes.

Through a public notice on Thursday, they noted that the temporary suspension is due to a security situation arising from consistent attacks on the trains passing through Mukuru kwa Njenga.

"We wish to inform our customers and the general public that we have suspended train services from Syokimau and Lukenya routes," they said.

Kenya Railways cited the Wednesday incident where rowdy individuals barricaded rail tracks and stone trains passing through the area.

The incident happened on the day violent protests were held in some parts of the country.

"We highlight two incidents where, yesterday evening, the Lukenya bound train was attacked at 6.00pm and this morning a train carrying 520 pupils was attacked at 11.00am," they said.

"We wish to reiterate that the safety of our passengers remains paramount to us."

They however noted that normal services will resume as soon as possible and apologized for the inconvenience.
