Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured coffee farmers that the government is fully dedicated to ensuring that they receive their entitled benefits.

He said the coffee market started deteriorating when they brought millers and marketers.

The DP was speaking on Tuesday at Wakulima House where he presided over the Nairobi Coffee Exchange auction.

"If you visit the rural areas, you will find an old man in a three-bedroom house that was built when there was a lot of money in the coffee market. The coffee sub-sector at the moment has been captured by cartels," he said.

Gachagua said earlier when he visited Meru they agreed upon many issues to streamline the sector and help the farmers who have undergone frustrations from cartels.

"We agreed to bring back the Coffee Board of Kenya which represents the farmers to help them avoid milling loses. We again agreed on bringing back Coffee Research Foundation which was helping the farmers in doing researches," the DP said.

Despite the State's commitment to improve the sector, the DP said it won't be an easy task.

Gachagua has been at the forefront in fighting cartels in the coffee sector in a bid to make the farmers benefit from their produce.

In early July, he headed a two-day meeting in Meru County.

During the conference, farmers, leaders and participants identified cartels and middlemen as the biggest stumbling block towards better returns for farmers.

The DP said he was ready to work harder to ensure the sector is free of the exploitative middlemen that have denied farmers the rightful returns.

"I’m incorruptible. Nobody can offer me anything to remove me from the path of coffee reforms that will put money in the pockets of farmers. The biggest legacy we will nurture is returning the dignity to the farmers,” he said
