Mandago whisked to Nakuru central police station for detention

The three are being accused of misappropriating funds meant for students.

Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago will spend the night in Nakuru Central Police Station after hours of grilling. 

Two other county officials Joshua Lelei and Meshack Rono will also sleep at Nakuru Central Police station 

The three are being accused of misappropriating funds for students who were to study in Finland and Canada. 

A charge sheet has indicated that the accused had between March 1, 2021 and September 12, 2021, within Uasin Gishu county, jointly with others conspired to steal Sh1.1 billion from a Kenyan bank account. 

"The amount mentioned was meant for overseas university fees for students under the Uasin Gishu County overseas Education Programme," the charge sheet indicated. 

A Nakuru court issued the arrest warrant on Wednesday, ordering the arrest of the senator to face various charges in court.

President William Ruto on Wednesday told those who allegedly stole millions from parents in the overseas education programme to return the money.

He said the fiasco was embarrassing and he would not allow such to happen again

Ruto who spoke in Eldoret town said it was an embarrassment for anyone to steal money meant for the education of young people in Uasin Gishu

He said those involved should carry their cross.

Earlier in the day, Mandago, through his Twitter account said there were rumours that he was sought by the police over a pending arrest.

The politician promised that he would present himself if required to.

He also claimed that he has talked with the affected families and was ready to refund the funds.

Before his arrival at the DCI regional Headquarters, there was tension around the Nakuru Law Courts as armed police officers sealed off all the entries.
