Opposition leader Raila Odinga shares a piece of cake with retired president Uhuru Kenyatta during Raila's birthday in October 2022.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta will on Thursday celebrate his 62nd birthday amidst reports that a major party has been organised for him.

Some politicians from Mt Kenya are reportedly planning to throw a bash to mark one year since he left office.

The venue of the event has, however, not been revealed by the organisers even as former Jubilee secretary general Jeremiah Kioni vehemently denied any existence of such plans.

Kioni told the Star that while Uhuru remains the Jubilee party leader, they have yet to plan any event to celebrate his birthday.

“Uhuru, yes, is our party leader but at the moment we have not planned anything ahead of the day...Maybe we shall plan but for now not yet because we have not met to discuss it,” he said.

The former Ndaragwa MP could also not confirm the politicians planning the ceremony.

“If Kenyans are planning to celebrate the day in their style, they are free to do so, it means they value him and remember him for his service to the nation,” he stated.

It remains unclear if he is currently in the country.

At a meeting with the editors on July 24, Uhuru announced he would be travelling to the United Kingdom (UK) for a vacation with his family.

"I have been at peace. I have never had as good family time as I wanted. I want to go on vacation with my children and grandchildren. Do not say I have run away. I need rest and they need me," Uhuru told the editors.

But, on October 6, he was seen co-chairing a technical meeting of the DRC peace process with Uganda's Yoweri Museveni in Uganda.

He is the facilitator of the East African Community (EAC)- led Nairobi Peace Process.

The former President was handed the mandate on July 22, 2022, by East African Community Heads of State at the end of the 22nd Ordinary Summit of EAC Heads of State in Arusha, Tanzania.

Uhuru maintained a low profile when it came to celebrating birthdays throughout his tenure until last year, only one month after handing over power when he showed up at an undisclosed location to celebrate it.

“I want to thank God for the peace that is prevailing in our country. I am also asking for forgiveness for those we may have spoken bad of and the ones who spoke badly of others,” Uhuru said in a clip that circulated last year.

While Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has positioned himself as the region’s de-facto leader, a vicious political war is swirling about who between the two is the kingpin.

Gachagua has already revealed plans to reach out to Uhuru to bury the hatchet for the sake of Mt Kenya unity.

The DP is seen as the region's political linchpin given his current position in government.

"Kenyatta was fronting Raila Odinga for the presidency and he lost. We have now decided to embrace him as our respectable son and statesman despite everything,” Gachagua said in a recent radio interview.

"As Mt Kenya leaders, we have agreed not to be fighting him and I'm planning to hold talks with him. I have ordered everyone to respect him and he is also doing good to keep his peace,” he said adding the mountain is stable, peaceful and united as before.

Uhuru was born on October 26, 1961.
