The impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza on Wednesday was one of the highlights of the week across the 47 counties.
At least 59 MCAs, all of whom were at the Assembly, out of the total 69 voted in support of the impeachment motion to oust the county boss.
This is the second time Mwangaza has been impeached by the Meru Assembly after the first attempt last year failed at the Senate.
The 10-hour motion debated to eject the governor was brought by Majority Leader Evans Mawira.
Her impeachment has since elicited mixed reactions even as Senators prepare to consider the impeachment report.
Mwangaza will now be required to fight for her survival before a special team of senators is formed to hear the matter.
A governor ceases to hold office if he or she is impeached by MCAs and the Senate ratifies his or her removal.
Here are some of the other major events that happened in the counties.
Nairobi
Governor Johnson Sakaja announced Wednesday a crackdown on hawkers operating along the pavements within the City.
The governor was speaking during a consultative meeting between enforcement officers, hawkers and executive officers.
He said the law must be followed and in areas where hawking is prohibited, he will not change his mind on it.
Homabay
Governor Gladys Wanga reshuffled chief offers in different departments on Wednesday in what she said was a move to enhance service delivery in the county.
The changes were made through an internal memo sent to the county Secretary Bernard Muok, all county executives and chief officers.
Eight chief officers were affected by the changes.
Nyamira
Governor Amos Nyaribo on Monday told off his Kisii counterpart Simba Arati in regards to a row over the border at Keroka town.
Nyaribo said there is no need for further political conversations on the matter as a team would be on site erecting beacons that separate the two devolved units.
"I don't think Keroka has any political dimension. We asked the national government which sent a team and raised the coordinates to erect the beacons, so what are we discussing, there is nothing," Nyaribo told journalists in Kisii.
Uasin Gishu
The county is planning to establish a new museum in Eldoret, ahead of the town's elevation to city status.
Chief Officer for Culture Eunice Suter said the county is working with the national government to put up the museum within the town.
She said the museum will promote diverse cultural practices in the cosmopolitan county.
Transzoia
The county has announced plans to relocate most health services from the Kitale Referral Hospital to the newly renamed Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital.
More than Sh1 billion has been used to put up facilities at the Wamalwa Kijana Referral Hospital.
The hospital was recently renamed by Governor George Natembeya in honour of the late Vice President, Michael Kijana Wamalwa.
Construction works at the hospital are more than halfway complete with the county chief officer for Health Dr Emmanuel Wanjala saying they are in the process of planning to relocate services to the new facility.
Garissa
Garissa County Speaker Idle Gure suspended Thursday three ward representatives.
The suspension came after chaos erupted in the house last week
Those suspended MCAs are Mohamed Khalif of Galbet, Abdirahman Ali of Sankuri ward, and Omar Abdi of Damajale ward.
The three were allegedly involved in the assembly's leadership disputes and will be out of the remainder of the session.
Their suspension means they would not receive allowances during their suspension period.
Kiambu
The newly launched Kiambu County sports extravaganza scheduled to kick off on October 28, has attracted 710 teams from 60 wards.
Football will be the tournament's flagship project and will run alongside other disciplines including basketball, netball, volleyball, and handball.
Governor Kimani Wamatangi, who launched the sporting activity, said his administration will ensure there are proper facilities and sports are taken seriously.
Turkana
Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai has said the county will pay compensation demanded by Uganda, as reparation for five Ugandans killed in Karamoja in 2022.
He said the county will procure livestock which will be used as "blood settlement" as demanded by President Yoweri Museveni.
Lomorukai said this is a traditional form of resolution of the conflict which resulted from the murder of three geologists and two UPDF soldiers in March 2022 by unknown people.
Uganda authorities later arrested 32 Turkana herders, who were sentenced to 20 years in prison after they were found guilty of being in possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
Council of Governors
At the COG, a number of activities happened in the week.
On Monday, COG Health Committee Chair Muthomi Njuki and Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung'u took part in a high-level bilateral meeting with a delegation from Austria.
The meeting brought together representatives of 24 tech support companies led by Federal Minister for Labour Martin Kocher.
Also in attendance was COG CEO Mary Mwiti.
During the meeting, the Tharaka Nithi Governor reaffirmed the counties’ dedication to investing in technology that empowers Level 1 and 2 hospitals.
The investment aims to enhance early disease detection and treatment capabilities.
During the same day, Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi chaired the inaugural Security and Foreign Affairs Committee meeting.
Members of the committee were briefed on the committee's, upcoming strategic activities and collaboration, achievements and challenges.
Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana was also elected the committee vice chair during the meeting held at the COG offices.
On Wednesday, the council’s Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives Committee chaired by Bungoma Governor Ken Lusaka held a consultative meeting with Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.
The meeting was convened to deliberate on the various issues in the agricultural sector.
Among the issues discussed include programs and projects being implemented directly across the counties.
This includes the distribution of fertilizer, milk coolers, farm machinery, legislations that claw back on devolved functions and the crop-specific parastatals at the national level among other issues.
Linturi noted that the issues raised by the Council were critical and would require the Ministry officials to have a separate meeting to deliberate on and come up with a concrete response to the issues.
It was agreed that a Joint Technical Committee co-chaired by principal secretary John Mueke and COG CEO Mary Mwiti be established to look into the issues raised by CoG and advise on the implementation modalities within 9 months.
A separate meeting between the representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and USAID Kenya was also held.
The purpose of this meeting was to share insights from Kenya's devolved sectors, including Agriculture, Water, Environment, and ASALs.
The U.S. government has consistently supported devolution in Kenya, fostering collaboration between the Council of Governors, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and USAID.
The collaboration in areas of technical assistance to the Council and Counties as well as technological transfer, COG said, aims to boost agricultural productivity and value addition within the counties.
“This will subsequently increase their exports to the U.S. market through the US-Africa trade agreements program,” a statement read.
COG was established under Section 19 of the Intergovernmental Relations Act (IGRA) 2012.
It comprises the governors from the 47 counties.
Its main functions are to promote visionary leadership, sharing of best practices, offering a collective voice on policy issues and promoting inter-county consultations.
It also encourages and initiates information sharing on the performance of counties with regard to the execution of their functions and collective consultation on matters of interest to counties.
Since the advent of devolution 10 years ago, there have been major strides that have been realized in the counties notwithstanding the challenges.
