Planning to use fireworks to usher in New Year? This is what gov't says

Anyone intending to display it must obtain a permit from the Inspector of Explosives.

The government has issued an advisory warning Kenyans about displaying fireworks as they usher in the New Year.

In a statement, the State Department of Mining notes that the use of fireworks which is usually marked by spectacular display poses dangers hence the need to adhere to proper safety standards.

The ministry has advised those intending to use the explosives to obtain a permit from the Inspector of Explosives in the ministry to ensure compliance with all safety measures.

“By their very nature, fireworks are explosives,” it reads.

“They are dangerous. Any careless handling has the potential to turn into a serious accident, trigger fire outbreaks, and cause loss of property and even deaths,” it adds.

The ministry has further stated that officers from the State Department should be notified and be present during fireworks displays.

Protection of lives and property calls for strict regulations and control of the sale, storage and usage of fireworks as stipulated under the Explosives Act, it says.

It has also warned the dealers against selling the fireworks to children as it amounts to a crime under the law.

“As you celebrate and make merry, always think about your safety and that of your loved ones,” reads the statement.

Fireworks have become a tradition all over the world as they are used to welcome the New Year.

The thrill and excitement of having the night skies lit by explosions of fire and dazzling lights is an experience fireworks enthusiasts look forward to.

Last year, nine people including children were killed following a stampede at the Freedom City Mall in Uganda, during a New Year’s Eve event.

 It is alleged that the stampede occurred as crowds of people rushed to see a fireworks show displayed at midnight to usher in the New Year.

Several others sustained injuries.
