Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has fired back at ex-DP Rigathi Gachagua over his allegations regarding the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP).
In a strongly worded statement, Duale condemned Gachagua’s opposition to the initiative, emphasising the inconsistency of his stance while tagging an old video clip where he (Gachagua) hailed the programme.
"It is both disheartening to see individuals who once championed this very program now standing in opposition to it," he said.
According to the CS, those opposed to it are not only undermining the progress of the nation but also denying many Kenyans the opportunity for a better life.
“Their actions reveal a blatant disregard for the welfare of the very people they claim to represent,” he stated adding that such actions were a betrayal of the people they claim to represent.
He further vowed that the government would not remain silent in the face of such opposition, promising to hold detractors accountable for attempting to obstruct a program that he described as a beacon of hope for millions of Kenyans.
"The time for political games is over; the people's needs must come first," the CS declared, reinforcing the government's commitment to the program.
He urged all leaders, whether in or out of government, to support initiatives that are designed for the greater good of the country.
The AHP, he pointed out, is a transformative project aimed at providing decent homes for ordinary Kenyans while also creating vital employment opportunities.
"It is a fundamental right for every Kenyan to have a roof over their head and the chance to earn a livelihood," he said.
Gachagua has recently gone on a spree criticising the government’s projects as he endears himself to the people after his ouster from office.
Speaking Monday during the launch of DAP-K headquarters in Nairobi, Gachagua claimed the project was riddled with corruption and that it was meant to benefit a few.
“I believed the project was about job creation until it came to my attention that it has nothing to do with that,” he claimed.
He said once a new government is sworn in, the housing levy will have to be abolished to restore the payslips’ dignity.
