A UN agency has created a platform to provide digital solutions to women and youth in 24 African countries, among them Kenya.

United National Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) said the initiative targets 5,000 individuals in Kenya.

Already, UNITAR has held a digital training programme, Digital Skills for Women and Youth in Africa, on Monday and Tuesday in Nairobi.

The training was presided over by the Japanese ambassador to Kenya, Ken Okaniwa and the head of UNITAR Chisa Mikami.

The training is to enable women and youth to find answers to the various day-to-day problems that they face through the use of digital solutions.

“One of our key mandates and objectives is to expose the youth to global innovation programmes. Through this collaboration, the youth who will go through our accelerator programmes have an opportunity to benefit from the government of Japan,” Elizabeth Ndungu, director of Digital Economy at the Ministry of ICT said.

The training came hot on the heels of the launch of a new digital skills library in Kaiboi National Polytechnic, Nandi County on Tuesday by President William Ruto and Cabinet Secretary of Ministry of Information Communications and Technology Eliud Owalo and Digital Economy PS John Tanui.

Jitume Lab is a programme created by the government as part of Konza Technopolis in partnership with the Ministry of ICT, Technical Vocational Education and Training Authority and ICT Authority.

The digital labs are created to provide the youth with access to digital services, skills and opportunities through the use of technology for job creation.

“The increased support given to learning institutions ensures equal access to quality education for all children, promoting inclusivity while driving our nation’s prosperity forward,” the Ministry of ICT was quoted.

The lab will be among the  117 centres created all around the country with the hope to provide more students with more than just digital opportunities but employment too.

A young man, Brian Kipchumba spoke to the President informing him of how he earns Sh27,000 weekly by performing tasks using Remotask, an online platform.
