President William Ruto will lead Kenyans in marking this year's International Women's Day celebrations. The event will be held in Embu.
International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and girls, while also making a call to action for strengthening gender equality and accelerating women’s empowerment.
The theme for the observance of the IWD 2024 is “Invest in women: Accelerate progress.”
It is based on the United Nations 68th Commission on the Status of Women priority theme ‘Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls by addressing poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective’.
Joseph ‘Jowie’ Irungu’s murder case
The High Court in Nairobi will today impose its sentence on Jowie Irungu.
This is after he was found guilty of the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
However, before he is sentenced, Jowie will be allowed to mitigate, the purpose being to encourage the judge to be lenient in the sentencing.
Jowie was convicted over the murder last month while his co-accused Jacque Maribe was let off the hook. The two were jointly facing the murder charges.
Maribe was acquitted based on the prosecution's failure to place her at the scene of the crime.
Rachel Ruto in Kisumu
First Lady Rachel Ruto will celebrate International Women's Day at Kisumu Women's Prison.
She will also launch the construction of the Chandaria Kisumu Women's Prison workshop.
