Leaders have been asked to extend their flood-rescuing efforts on the ground and not just speak in boardrooms.

The ongoing heavy rains have resulted in floods that have led to the destruction of properties and loss of lives.

Speaking on Wednesday, Ruaraka MP TJ Kajwang’ said that the efforts of the leaders are appreciated but much work is needed on the ground.

His sentiments come after Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hosted key stakeholders to discuss the Nairobi Rivers regeneration on Wednesday.

"There is the executive which is in the National Government and I appreciate very much, I'm informed now that there is a meeting ongoing by the Deputy President understanding the riparian, sustainable efforts and framework and they are thinking of how to create commissions which are going to work around the riparian Nairobi water, we appreciate that efforts," he said.

The legislator, however, said that the efforts should be equally implemented on the ground where floods are being experienced.

"I want to tell them that we live in Nairobi, my life is ghetto and as well as they are talking about those beautiful things in Karen, we are in the practical field, that is a theory, they should put aside those good papers and come and be with us because we want to see their faces and how much they empathise with us. We are not asking for much."

He said that as much as Kenyans need the money, they should also feel their presence and sympathise with them on the ground.

During the Wednesday meeting at Karen, the DP said that Nairobi is the door to Kenya and Africa, and the regeneration is important and urgent.

He insisted that the City cannot be the top investment destination when its rivers are full of health hazards.

"Pollution and other forms of degradation of the Nairobi Rivers are a threat to the existence of our people, not only in Nairobi and its environs but also across the country.

"We cannot take pride in Nairobi as the top investment destination in Africa and globally when the rivers are choking in pollution- a high health hazard to our people," Gachagua said.

He said the leaders present, who included senior leaders of Ministries, State departments and agencies, Nairobi MCAs, legislators and members of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, have a responsibility to make the right decision in the interest of the people.
