Kenya Meteorological Department has said Tropical storm IALY has weakened to a moderate tropical storm.
The department however said the storm remains significant due to its intensity near the equator.
"IALY is experiencing rapid weakening and is expected to dissipate completely by Wednesday morning while remaining offshore. The residual vortex is unlikely to persist long enough to cross the equator," Met said.
Met said the IALY is currently travelling in the North direction at 9km/h with max wind speeds of 75km/h and max wind gusts of 100km/h.
It said the centre of IALY is expected to stay over 150km from the East African coast with peripheral bands of the system beginning to touch the coast.
"Moderate rain, stormy conditions and strong winds are anticipated along the western periphery of the system impacting coastal areas of Kenya and neighbouring countries. "
"Coastal regions should prepare for waves greater than 3 meters," it warned.
In its forecast, Met said Breezy SSW to strong S winds of between 10-30 knots accompanied by choppy seas expected in morning hours.
"SE waves of between 5-12ft with large short period waves expected in Kwale, Kilifi and Lamu."
"Breezy SSW to moderately S winds of between 10-30 knots accompanied by moderate to choppy seas expected in the afternoon."
Met advised small boats and crafts to keep off deep waters remains in effect.
Met released the update after at least two people were killed as strong winds from Tropical Cyclone IALY hit various parts of the Kenyan coast on Tuesday.
The victims include a pupil aged four years, police said.
Coast police boss George Sedah said property was destroyed in the chaos that followed as the winds swept through the region.
“We have sent teams to check in villages and report back on the veracity of the tragedy,” he said.
The pupil aged four was killed after the strong winds hit Gogoraruhe Mosque ECD School at about 4 pm destroying the roof.
The incident happened in the Mbalamweni sub-location in the Kayafungo location, Kaloleni.
Police who responded to the scene said five pupils were rushed to Mariakani Sub County Hospital where one female pupil succumbed to her injuries.
Four other pupils were admitted with various head injuries, police said.
They were aged five, two and two of them are aged four years.
