The Kenya Diabetes Study Group (KDSG) is calling on health researchers to submit their abstracts for the upcoming 9th Annual Scientific Conference.
The conference slated to take place from June 5 to 8, 2024 in Mombasa seeks to bring together a broad spectrum of stakeholders from the healthcare sector.
They include researchers, healthcare professionals, scientists, policymakers, and students, both postgraduate and undergraduate.
The upcoming conference is now calling for presentation abstracts that address the critical health concern in Kenya.
Given that a significant portion of the diabetic population remains undiagnosed, there is an urgent need for increased awareness, improved diagnostic measures, and more effective treatment protocols.
The KDSG conference aims to tackle these issues head-on, offering a forum for the latest research and best practices in diabetes care.
Topics related to diabetes and endocrinology are particularly welcomed.
Diabetes, a chronic condition characterised by the body’s inability to produce sufficient insulin or to use it effectively, affects a significant portion of the Kenyan population.
According to the Ministry of Health, between two to five per cent of Kenyans are living with diabetes.
Alarmingly, 60 per cent of the adult population with diabetes remains undiagnosed.
Most of these individuals have type 2 diabetes, live in urban areas, and are of working age.
“The conference represents a crucial opportunity to address the growing health concerns related to diabetes in Kenya,” Nancy Kunyiha said.
“With a significant portion of the diabetic population remaining undiagnosed, it is essential to increase awareness, improve diagnostic measures, and implement more effective treatment protocols,” she added.
Kunyiha is a Consultant Physician Endocrinologist and the current chair of the Kenya Diabetes Study Group.
Kunyiha has facilitated and supported the training and mentorship of a new generation of endocrinologists in Kenya and is also a founding fellow of the East Central and South African College of Physicians (ECSACOP) and a member of various medical associations.
The conference provides a unique platform for participants to showcase their research, share best practices, and contribute to the collective knowledge in internal medicine, particularly focusing on diabetes care.
Over the years, the conference has become a cornerstone for advancing diabetes treatment and education in Kenya.
The 9th Annual Scientific Conference hosted by the Kenya Diabetes Study Group represents a vital opportunity for all stakeholders in diabetes care and research.
By bringing together diverse voices and expertise, the conference aims to foster innovation, collaboration, and significant improvements in diabetes management in Kenya.
Established by diabetes specialists in Nairobi, the Kenya Diabetes Study Group aims to enhance diabetes education, promote local research, and improve the educational capacity of healthcare providers across the country.
KDSG has become a pivotal organisation in Kenya’s fight against diabetes, fostering collaborations and spearheading numerous initiatives aimed at improving diabetes care.
