The family of performing artist and Comedian Fred Omondi has opened up on his death.

Eunice Atieno Omondi, who is mother to Fred and Erick Omondi, mourned the death of the comedian expressing how he had left a void in her heart.

"I was informed about the death of Fred on Sunday at around 11 am," she said.

She described Fred as one who was always playful and full of mischief when growing up.

She however noted that his mischief bore fruits in the end.

"Fred was always full of mischief and fun, and we never interfered with that. It bore fruits in his life. He loved his family dearly and personally, he loved me so much," she said.

She further said that learning about the performing artist's death has broken her heart.

"His death has broken my heart. Fred even made it possible for me to meet Oburu Odinga, which was a significant moment for me. He told me that we were going to celebrate together and when we got there he introduced me as his mother," Atieno said.

She therefore urged everyone to come together so that they can be able to give Fred a peaceful send-off.

She noted that as much as they were carrying on with the burial arrangements, they were also calling on well wishers to come through.

"We are on with the burial arrangements and by June 29 we will lay Fred to rest. When you have a loss, you cannot manage it alone. At the moment we have not gone that far in terms of preparations and still calling for any help," she said.

Fred's cousin Kenneth Matiba described him as a person of the people.

He said that the late comedian was close to most people and his demise was a big loss to them.

"Fred was a good person. He knew people and was close to everyone. We are mourning deeply because we have lost someone dear," Matiba said.

The family went ahead to welcome different leaders to join them in mourning the late comedian.

Fred died in a road accident on Kagundo Road on Saturday morning last week.

Police said the accident happened after a bodaboda carrying Fred was involved in a head-on collision with a speeding bus around 6 am.

"The accident happened near Caltex Petrol station on Kangundo Road,"  a police report filed at Buruburu station stated.

The report further said that the bus was heading to Nairobi CBD from Kayole while the bodaboda was heading in the opposite direction and was on the wrong side of the road.

As a result, the rider collided head-on with the speeding bus. Police said Fred Omondi died on the spot.

The rider suffered serious multiple injuries on both legs and fractured his two hands.

The rider was rushed to Mama Lucy Hospital for medication. Fred's body was later moved to Chiromo mortuary.
