Travel on the SGR promises to get a lot more comfortable following the arrival of Premium Class coaches.

Premium Class coaches give passengers access to some special extras, including space as well as the best service and entertainment making your trip more memorable.

In a statement on X, Kenya Railways said it had shipped in four such Premium Class coaches.

“The much-awaited Premium Class coaches are here. The four Premium coaches are among a batch of ten economy-class coaches, one dining car, one power car and four first-class coaches. The offloading is taking place at the Port of Mombasa.”

In a previous update on July 5, its Madaraka Express would soon start offering premium services complete with recliner seats.

“Ready for next-level luxury? KR Premium is coming soon to redefine your travel experience. Fully Reclining seats for your comfort and relaxation,” the carrier said.

Unlike the normal wagons, each of the new coaches has a 28-seat capacity with sufficient legroom.

“KR Premium is set to redefine luxury travel with exclusive amenities and top-notch comfort," Kenya Railways said.

A number of Kenyans on X enquired on when the new luxury service will be rolled out and on which routes but Kenya Railways remained noncommittal on the subject.

“We understand your eagerness for more information. We are in the final stages of preparation and will share specific timelines soon. Your understanding is greatly appreciated, and we'll keep you updated,” Kenya Railways said on July 8.

“This is fine, lakini zile viti za economy class mnafaa kutoa muekee watu viti za maana. Ata si mueke zile za bus buana,” one user suggested.

“We greatly appreciate your recommendation to enhance our train services. Please be assured that the corporation has established a framework to address the issue you highlighted,” the company said in response.

“Lastly increase speed for the express train,” another user recommended.

“Your recommendation to enhance our train services is greatly appreciated. We are dedicated to providing an even better travel experience, and your insights contribute significantly to our ongoing efforts,” Kenya Railways said.

Kenya Railways has not suggested the prices for the new luxury coaches yet.

The company, however, previously said that the premium coaches will offer passengers access to VIP lounges and benefit from priority boarding and disembarkation at terminals.

It said commuters will also have extra storage space including for shoes and the introduction of catering services in the segregated compartments which offer privacy and exclusivity to the passengers.

Madaraka Express offers commuter services between Mombasa and Nairobi with stops in between.
