Transport Principal Secretary Mohamed Daghar inspected the soon-to-be-launched Premium class coaches for the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger train.

The coaches were shipped by Kenya Railways last week.

The Transport PS got a feel of the new Premium class coach at Port Reitz Freight station on Monday.

The coach, Kenya Railway says has modern features designed to elevate the customer experience.

The PS was accompanied by Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Capt William Ruto, KPA Chairman Dalu Tayari and  Kenya Railways Managing Director Phillip Mainga.

In a previous update on July 5,  Madaraka Express said it would soon start offering premium services complete with recliner seats.

“Ready for next-level luxury? KR Premium is coming soon to redefine your travel experience. Fully Reclining seats for your comfort and relaxation,” the carrier said.

Unlike the normal wagons, each of the new coaches has a 28-seat capacity with sufficient legroom.

The new coaches include 4 premium, 3 first class and 11 upgraded economy coaches, 1 dining car and 1 power car. The coaches will be introduced on the service soon, Kenya Railway said.

“KR Premium is set to redefine luxury travel with exclusive amenities and top-notch comfort," Kenya Railways said.

Several Kenyans on X enquired about when the new luxury service will be rolled out and on which routes but Kenya Railways urged them to hold their horses.

“We understand your eagerness for more information. We are in the final stages of preparation and will share specific timelines soon. Your understanding is greatly appreciated, and we'll keep you updated,” Kenya Railways said on July 8.

Kenya Railways has not yet suggested the prices for the new luxury coaches.

The company, however, previously said that the premium coaches would offer passengers access to VIP lounges and benefit from priority boarding and disembarkation at terminals.

It said commuters will also have extra storage space including for shoes and the introduction of catering services in the segregated compartments which offer privacy and exclusivity to the passengers.

Madaraka Express offers commuter services between Mombasa and Nairobi with stops in between.
