Parents and guardians will be informed of the university fees they will pay for first year students starting August 19, 2024.

The new announcement comes after the July 19 decision by the Ministry of Education to nullify fees for KCSE 2023 student cohort that was to join universities in September.

Higher Education and Research PS Beatrice Inyangala further said that the government will only support learners who will have applied for funding.

She said this while announcing that the ministry has extended the application deadline for 2023 KCSE students joining universities in the 2024-25 academic year by 10 days to August 15, 2024.

“The ministry of Education opened the application portal for scholarships and loans for the 2023 KCSE cohort on June 18, 2024. Since then, the process of applying for scholarships and loans has been ongoing,” she said.

The government had indicated last month that by the beginning of August 5, 2024, the respective universities would communicate the new fees structure.

In a press release, the PS noted that as of August 4, 2024, a total of 79,038 university students had applied for both loans and scholarships but 74,237 were yet to apply for funding.

She expressed government’s commitment to providing quality and affordable education to students in universities as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training Institutions (TVETS).

Inyangala assured parents that their children’s placements in the respective academic programmes were firmly secured.

“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public, particularly parents/guardians of students, and, students that the fees to be paid by students and their families/guardians as relates to the full cost of each degree programme as previously communicated in the admission letters is hereby nullified, and, does not apply anymore,” stated the PS.

“It is also important for the students and their parents/guardians to note that their placement in the respective academic programmes remains unchanged,” she clarified.

Since May 2023, all universities have been required to reveal the cost of degree academic programmes on the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) website as directed by President William Ruto.

This, according to the President, would enhance transparency and accountability, making it easy for parents and students to decide on the courses that suite them.
