  • Karua expressed concern on the recent happenings in the country saying there needs to be a watchdog to check on the executive.
  • She said that those who participate in the violation of another person’s rights are laying the foundation for the violation of their rights.

Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has weighed in on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment motion.

At least 281 against 44 MPs at the National Assembly voted to support the motion on Gachagua’s impeachment.

The DP was impeached at the National Assembly under 11 grounds, which he denied, saying he was not guilty.

Gachagua said that he would fight the outcome of the impeachment motion.

In a statement on X on Wednesday, Karua said that, just like any other Kenyan, the DP deserves a fair process.

“Rigathi Gachagua is no angel, but like any citizen, he deserves due process, not mob lynching. We must invest in systems that work even for your worst enemy,” Karua said.

“Gachagua's circumstances today should be a reminder to each one of them and all people in authority that power is transient and tomorrow it will be you.”

Karua expressed concern on the recent happenings in the country, saying there needs to be a watchdog to check on the executive.

She said that those who participate in the violation of another person’s rights are laying the foundation for the violation of their rights.

According to her, the National Assembly allegedly manipulated a constitutional process.

“They have sacrificed the spirit and ideals of constitutionalism on the altar of self-preservation. However, we cannot fail to commend the few members of the National Assembly who approached the debate with sobriety.”

Karua rallied Kenyans to pray for the country and that the Senate prove itself worthy of the status of the upper house.

Gachagua becomes the first DP to be impeached, marking a significant moment in Kenya’s political landscape.

The DP will defend himself before the Senate plenary. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi directed a plenary session on Wednesday and Thursday next week, where the DP will defend himself against the impeachment by the National Assembly.

The National Assembly and Gachagua have until the end of Monday to submit their evidence.
