The prime suspect accused of the alleged masterminding of the assault of a Mombasa blogger was on Tuesday charged with torture in a separate case.
The man is facing another case in the September 12 abduction and subsequent sexual harassment of blogger Bruce John Khajira aka Chawa – 001.
He was arrested at the Lunga Lunga border on November 7 while trying to flee to Tanzania.
In an update on Tuesday, November 12, the DCI said the suspect was arraigned on Monday at the Shanzu Law Courts and charged with abduction, gang rape and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The DCI said it was, however, established that the accused was a wanted person by DCI detectives in Jomvu in a separate case of torture.
Four victims of his atrocities positively identified him, the DCI said.
They had reported the matter on August 15, 2024, at the Mikindani police station.
“In the booked report, the suspect while in the company of others purported to be enforcing the County Government of Mombasa bylaws, thereby torturing and physically assaulting the complainants at the Mombasa County Inspectorate offices located in Tudor,” the DCI said.
The DCI said the suspect denied committing the offence of torture contrary to Section 5 (1) of the Prevention of Torture Act and was released on a Sh500,000 bond or a cash bail of Sh200,000.
“The accused was taken back to remand, where he awaits the determination of his bond application on blogger Bruce Khajira's case on Friday 15, 2024,” the DCI said.
He said investigations into both cases are at advanced stages and more of his accomplices are being pursued.
Investigations into the alleged sexual assault of the blogger forensically placed the suspect at both the primary and secondary scenes of the incident.
Detectives at the Digital Forensics Lab also established that he was in constant communication with other known perpetrators before, during and after the incident.
The accomplices have since been identified and are being pursued in various parts of the country where they went into hiding.
