Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has joined the nation in mourning with the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic accident along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway.
In a condolence message on his X account on Thursday, Mudavadi prayed for comfort and strength for the families.
“In this time of profound grief, may the Lord grant them comfort and strength,” he said.
He also wished the injured a quick and full recovery.
Mudavadi took the opportunity to urge all road users to be cautious so as to not cause tragedies like the accident on Wednesday.
“As we approach the festive season, I urge all road users to exercise extra caution and vigilance to ensure the safety of all,” he said.
The accident which occurred on Wednesday at 6 pm, claimed the lives of 10 people along the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway at the Iguhu Bridge.
In a report, police said a tanker heading towards Kakamega lost control and rammed two 14-seater matatus that were going to Chavakali.
Scores of passengers were injured in the accident and were rushed to Vihiga County Referral Hospital and Kakamega County Referral Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
The driver of the tanker reportedly fled the scene after the accident.
The lorry is said to have hit a bump, lost control, and veered to the right side of the road.
“Due to the impact, 10 people died on the spot and 20 people were injured,” police said.
The bodies were removed to Kakamega County General and Referral Hospital Morgue to await identification and postmortem.
“Efforts to trace the driver are in progress,” police said.
Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) showed over two thousand people lost their lives to road accidents in the period between January to July 7, 2024.
